Indicator 1.9 – Sample Zero Tolerance Policy Language

Sample 1

“[YOUR ORG NAME] has a zero tolerance for abuse in ministry programs and ministry activities. It is the responsibility of every staff and worker at [YOUR ORG NAME] to act in the best interest of all minors in every program. We are committed to taking reasonable measures to ensure the safety and protection of minors and workers in our care. In the event a staff, worker, or ministry participant observes any inappropriate behaviors (i.e. policy violations, neglectful supervision, poor role-modeling, etc.) or suspected abuse, neglect, or grooming behaviors (physical, emotional, or sexual) it is that individual’s responsibility to immediately report their observations to immediate supervisor. Workers and staff have no right to privacy or confidentiality regarding their own violations of child safety protocols. [YOUR ORG NAME] reserves the right to report such violations to members, donors, other employers, or other organizations where the violator may serve. We allow no clergy-penitent privilege.”

Sample 2

“It is the policy of [YOUR ORG NAME] that extensive precaution and safeguards are to be implemented and observed to prevent child abuse of all types at [YOUR ORG NAME], and to swiftly address and resolve all suspicions and allegations of abuse as outlined in this policy. [YOUR ORG NAME] maintains a zero-tolerance policy for child abuse and will strive to protect children and workers with reasonable safeguards, and to respond appropriately to allegations of child abuse or neglect.”

Sample 3

“[YOUR ORG NAME] has zero tolerance for abuse. As believers and as a church, we are called to love, protect, and shepherd the vulnerable under our care. How we do it either reflects God’s image through the redemptive work of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit or speaks a devastating lie about the gospel. The goals of this policy are to prevent abuse of the vulnerable in our church and, should abuse take place, to outline an appropriate response.”

“[YOUR ORG NAME] will remove the accused from their position until the situation in question has been resolved”
