SUMMARY:Handling Allegations in a Ministry: Responses and Investigations Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Receiving an allegation of some kind of misconduct is always a shock and may trigger a crisis situation. The end goal will be to bring peace and healing\, but it may be a long journey. This talk will provide principles on how to respond initially\, what plans to put in place\, and how to evaluate if an investigation is needed. Then it walks through how to plan and execute a good investigation\, addressing some practical and legal concerns. This may include “red flags\,” who should conduct an investigation\, and to what extent legal counsel and other experts may be needed. A correct approach will help avoid serious mistakes\, minimize damage\, and prepare the organization to provide healing to people harmed. An investigation is designed to uncover truth\, but the goal should be for the truth to be used for repentance and healing. \n\n\n\nThis event will be free for ECAP Members and $20 for non-members. She advises on numerous misconduct investigations. She is also the founder of Telios Law PLLC. Theresa was mentored by judges at the Colorado Court of Appeals and worked at a large law firm serving religious institutions and doing general litigation before opening Telios Law. She has since gone on to represent a variety of businesses\, ministries\, churches\, and individual clients in matters ranging from child protection to employment to civil rights and more. Her cross-cultural experience helps her serve ministries and businesses well\, particularly in negotiating employment problems and conducting internal investigations into misconduct allegations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Handling Allegations In Ministry: Responses and Investigations\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA church office worker complains about romantic advances made by a married pastor. What do you do? Parents in your congregation accuse a teenage boy of touching their daughter inappropriately. How should you handle it? A woman in your ministry files a sexual harassment complaint about a male coworker\, which turns into a confusing he said/she said clash. How can you determine the truth? \n\n\n\nAllegations of harm must be taken seriously. The health and reputation of the organization\, the potential victim\, and the accused are at stake. How do you go about investigating in a proper and godly way? \n\n\n\nThis handbook helps pastors\, ministry leaders\, board members\, and HR professionals navigate the process of response and investigation\, which may require outside expertise. Jeff served as a vice president at Southern Seminary in Louisville from 2008-2016. He is an elder at Sunrise Community Church (EFCA) and owner of Lumino Global Consulting and Coaching. In addition to implementing child protection programs at several ministries\, his experience includes team building\, development/fundraising\, hospitality\, international relations\, strategic planning\, and revitalization. Jeff enjoys reading\, exploring\, and spending time with his wife Kristil and kids. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Showers co-founded Simms Showers\, a Baltimore\, Maryland-based law firm\, in 2002 as a principal partner and now heads up the firm’s new Northern Virginia/Metropolitan D.C. office. His practice focuses on civil and commercial litigation and church\, nonprofit\, and business law. Showers regularly handles numerous lawsuits for and against churches\, nonprofits\, and small businesses. He also provides guidance on a variety of matters\, including risk management\, tax exemption\, land use\, and employment issues to defend against current or future legal liability. \n\n\n\nShowers has served hundreds of churches\, denominations\, and nonprofits nationwide throughout his career\, including the Southern Baptist Convention\, the Assemblies of God\, the Presbyterian Church of America\, Americans United for Life\, and Youth With a Mission. Prior to entering private practice in 1989\, Showers served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General and served as Executive Director of the National Obscenity Enforcement Unit (NOEU)\, later called the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS)\, within the US Department of Justice. \n\n\n\nShowers sits on numerous boards. He serves as past president on the national board of directors of Christian Legal Society\, and as chairman of Gateway Community Church. He previously served as a member of the Southern Baptist Convention’s executive committee. \n\n\n\nShowers earned his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1980. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University in 1977.
