DESCRIPTION:At Telios Law PLLC we are seeing unprecedented levels of allegations and misconduct in areas that are supposed to be safe and secure—schools\, churches\, families—which also creates existential threats to the organization. To build the Church\, we have to keep the next generation safe. But it’s not just the children. For a healthy ministry or even workplace\, the culture of safety and protection should operate throughout the organization. This existential danger also presents an incredible opportunity: people will go to where they find safety and healing. To that end\, it’s important to consider sexual harassment as well as child safeguarding. They are closely related\, and sometimes even overlap. By promoting a culture of protection\, the Church can foster healing\, keep people safe\, and strengthen the organization. \n\n\n\nThis event is free for ECAP Members and $25 for non-members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our Presenter:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheresa Sidebotham assists organizations in the U.S. and internationally\, with a special focus on employment law\, religious and nonprofit law\, and child safety. She advises on numerous misconduct investigations. She is also the founder of Telios Law PLLC. Theresa was mentored by judges at the Colorado Court of Appeals and worked at a large law firm serving religious institutions and doing general litigation before opening Telios Law. She has since gone on to represent a variety of businesses\, ministries\, churches\, and individual clients in matters ranging from child protection to employment to civil rights and more. John began his career in the public sector serving briefly in the U.S. Border Patrol\, the U.S. Capitol Police and then more extensively he worked for the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) for more than 28 years. John served in many top leadership positions within the USMS. After retirement from the USMS\, John began his private sector career as the Director of Security Operations for the Information Systems and Global Solutions business sector of the nation’s largest defense contractor\, Lockheed Martin Corporation. John finished his lengthy career in the nonprofit sector having retired in April 2022 as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). In his capacity as CEO\, John was the chief child safety advocate for NCMEC and as such helped shape public policy and encourage community action to ensure every child has a safe childhood. John has testified before Congress\, the European Commission\, and EUROPOL as a subject matter expert regarding the global problem of child exploitation. In addition\, John was credited with growing the organization to over 400 employees and an annual revenue base of more than 60 million dollars\, all of which was focused on finding missing children and stopping child exploitation.More recently\, John and his wife became owners/operators of Harvest of Hope Farm\, LLC in Culpeper\, Virginia where they grow produce in large quantities\, 100% of which is donated to regional food banks. John’s roots as the son of a dairy farmer brought his career life full circle where he now once again enjoys the agrarian lifestyle. \n\n\n\nHuman Trafficking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHuman sex trafficking is the exploitation of a person for profit and the trauma it leaves in its wake is devastating. There are many myths associated with human trafficking and those myths distract us from what is really happening to our children right under our noses.  Every day in almost every city in America children are being sold for sex and we can stop it. In this session you will learn what human trafficking looks like in our country and what our response should be. You  We will cover ways to protect children and wrap around those in our communities with specific vulnerabilities. She currently calls Tampa\, Florida home. \n\n\n\nWhile Amber desires to create a safer world for the most vulnerable among us\, she most ardently desires that the church be a space where abuse survivors can experience the comfort\, love\, and peace of God. This has led her to her work as both a consultant and a trainer for local churches. Kevin also serves as a lay pastor with Light City Bible Church. Kevin began his professional career in 2000 as a police officer in Fishers\, Indiana. He was promoted to sergeant in 2007 and continued to serve Fishers Police until 2012. Before leaving the police department\, Kevin co-founded My Cyber Guardian Educational Services\, Inc.\, in Noblesville\, where he served as the full-time operations manager before moving his family to the Tampa Bay area in 2013 to be part of planting Harvest Bible Chapel in the Tampa community. Kevin earned his Master of Science in Human Services from Walden University and his Bachelor of General Studies from Indiana University. Kevin and his wife\, Misty\, were licensed therapeutic foster parents in the state of Indiana and adopted three of their six children through Indiana’s foster care system. Kevin and Misty are passionate about Christ\, shepherding people and serving children and families. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatt EspenshadeMatt Espenshade is the Executive Pastor at The Journey Church in Lebanon\, Tennessee. Before entering full-time ministry\, he enjoyed a 24-year career as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In his last assignment\, Mr. Espenshade led the FBI’s Nashville office\, directing all operations throughout middle Tennessee. During his career in the FBI\, Mr. Espenshade served in various domestic and international leadership positions including Legal Attaché in Budapest\, Hungary\, and Nairobi\, Kenya. Mr. Espenshade served as a Military Intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. He has a B.S. from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia\, PA\, and an M.S. in Organizational Leadership from Norwich University in Northfield\, VT. He is married to Lisa Espenshade\, together they have four children. Mr. Espenshade is also an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Cumberland University and sits on the board of directors for Blue Sky Global Ministries\, Imago Classical Academy\, and the Evangelical Council for Abuse Protection. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeyland GlennWeyland Glenn is an Elder and the Executive Pastor at Providence Church in Frisco\, TX. He and his family have been members of Providence since 2008. Weyland is a strategic leader who encourages collaboration and open dialogue with the aim of creating and sustaining high-performing teams. His primary responsibilities include ministry oversight\, staff development\, and vision execution. He truly shepherds those he leads. He is a master at communicating belief in people and commissioning them to effectively use their gifts in order to advance the mission. Prior to joining Providence Church\, Weyland spent seven years working in the corporate world in areas of Finance and Human Resources. Immediately after college\, Weyland served as the Regional Director for K-Life Ministries from 2001-2008. Weyland earned a BA in Finance from Texas A&M University and an MA in Leadership from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Weyland has been married to his high school sweetheart for 23 years and they have four wonderful children ages 9-18. They are a busy family and love sports\, eating out\, and playing cards!

In his capacity as CEO\, John was the chief child safety advocate for NCMEC and as such helped shape public policy and encourage community action to ensure every child has a safe childhood. John has testified before Congress\, the European Commission\, and EUROPOL as a subject matter expert regarding the global problem of child exploitation. In addition\, John was credited with growing the organization to over 400 employees and an annual revenue base of more than 60 million dollars\, all of which was focused on finding missing children and stopping child exploitation. More recently\, John and his wife became owners/operators of Harvest of Hope Farm\, LLC in Culpeper\, Virginia where they grow produce in large quantities\, 100% of which is donated to regional food banks. DESCRIPTION:1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. What can Christians do to change these disturbing facts? \nJulie Lowe argues that Christians must lead the way in prevention and response measures to keep kids safe and to respond with the hope of the gospel. Julie is a licensed professional counselor who brings over twenty years of counseling experience to help equip parents to become aware of this issue\, and equip their children to recognize\, respond\, and report immoral behavior from an adult. \nSafeguards 4 Kids will help parents and caregivers to have wisdom and discernment in parenting\, and will teach them how to have age-appropriate conversations with their kids about abuse and threats. DESCRIPTION:The aim of the Child Protection Cohort is to provide support for leaders of a child/youth-serving organization to increase the protection standards of their programs. The Cohort is a five-month program that equips leaders to consider\, develop\, implement\, and review safety measures that reflect the Child Safety Standards of the Evangelical Council for Abuse Prevention. This will be accomplished through required readings of assigned books and cohort discussions designed to put knowledge into practice and aid in understanding the fundamentals of creating and implementing a child protection program. He previously served as a pastor at Boston’s historic Park Street Church and at churches in Vancouver\, Canada and Charlottesville\, Virginia\, as well as a campus chaplain at Yale University. He preaches\, writes and engages in collaborative leadership to connect the Bible to the intellectual and cultural issues of the day. He regularly teaches in conferences and classrooms; addresses faith concerns with elected officials and public institutions; and provides theological and cultural commentary to leading news outlets. He serves on the boards of Christianity Today\, World Relief\, and The Salvation Army\, USA. Kim received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations\, his M.Div. from Regent College in Vancouver\, and his B.A. from Northwestern University. \n  \nLane Paulsen\n\n\n\n\n\n \nLane Paulsen provides legal counsel in corporate\, transactional\, employment\, and governance matters for not-for-profit organizations. Her clients include churches\, religious organizations\, schools\, and universities locally and nationwide. \nLane’s corporate work includes the formation of new tax-exempt entities\, training new board members\, drafting corporate and operational policies to align with best practices and advance the corporation’s mission. Lane also advises clients on employment matters\, including contracts\, disciplinary policies and termination procedures\, and conducts workplace investigations. She regularly presents and speaks on governance issues\, child protection and abuse awareness\, facilitysecurity\, and sexual harassment prevention.  \nLane spent over a decade as General Counsel of Times Square Church\, serving as part of the Executive Leadership team and focusing on employment practices\, risk management\, intellectual property\, and contracts.
