DESCRIPTION:Child safety and abuse prevention are issues of Great Commission significance. If our goal is to make disciples\, we must also be good stewards of the precious resources that God has entrusted to us\, especially vulnerable image-bearers. Unfortunately\, abuse is a problem in our culture from which the church is not exempt. The good news is that there are steps that ministry leaders can take to protect children under their care. In this session\, we will cover the basics of creating a child protection program at your church including appropriate screening measures\, children’s worker training\, and response plans. Creating a child protection program can feel like a daunting task\, but ministry leaders should leave this session with resources and simple\, actionable steps to get started. \n  \n  \n \nHannah Bolick\nHannah Bolick currently serves as the Abuse Prevention & Response Coordinator for the SBC Executive Committee. She previously served as Communication Coordinator at the Evangelical Council for Abuse Prevention (ECAP) and is on the Child Safety Team at Eastwood Community Church. She is a World Journalism Institute graduate and has a B.A. in English\, a B.A. in Communication\, and an MA in Strategic Communication from East Carolina University. Hannah is also the communication coordinator at Clarity Camp\, a discipleship-focused youth summer camp devoted to impacting the next generation with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. DESCRIPTION:A code of conduct is a formal\, policy-type document which outlines the ministry’s ethical and behavioral expectations and rules for leaders\, employees\, volunteers\, board members\, and anyone that may be representing the organization. A code of conduct is an important tool in educating your team for the purpose of ensuring ethical\, legal\, and behavior that meets the values and beliefs that shape the core identify of the ministry.  \n\n\n\n\nFor Christian leaders\, a code of conduct will typically reflect biblical and moral guidelines that help to build trust and shape culture. Regarding child and youth protection and abuse prevention\, a code of conduct is critical at communicating clear expectations that set the leader or team member up for success in their role.  \n\n\n\nIn this day and age\, codes of conduct are becoming common place and may include adherence to a statement of faith\, lifestyle positions\, ethical behavior including social media and often times defining inappropriate technology\, messaging\, and interaction\, especially when minors\, vulnerable adults\, and other key leadership expectations are established.  \n\n\n\nJoin attorney Lane Paulsen as she interviews Dr. Walter Kim\, president of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) for this important conversation about codes of conduct\, ministry\, and setting standards for leaders and workers in the twenty-first century. He previously served as a pastor at Boston’s historic Park Street Church and at churches in Vancouver\, Canada and Charlottesville\, Virginia\, as well as a campus chaplain at Yale University. He preaches\, writes and engages in collaborative leadership to connect the Bible to the intellectual and cultural issues of the day. He regularly teaches in conferences and classrooms; addresses faith concerns with elected officials and public institutions; and provides theological and cultural commentary to leading news outlets. He serves on the boards of Christianity Today\, World Relief\, and The Salvation Army\, USA. Kim received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations\, his M.Div. from Regent College in Vancouver\, and his B.A. from Northwestern University. \n  \nLane Paulsen\n\n\n\n\n\n \nLane Paulsen provides legal counsel in corporate\, transactional\, employment\, and governance matters for not-for-profit organizations. Her clients include churches\, religious organizations\, schools\, and universities locally and nationwide. \nLane’s corporate work includes the formation of new tax-exempt entities\, training new board members\, drafting corporate and operational policies to align with best practices and advance the corporation’s mission. Lane also advises clients on employment matters\, including contracts\, disciplinary policies and termination procedures\, and conducts workplace investigations. She regularly presents and speaks on governance issues\, child protection and abuse awareness\, facilitysecurity\, and sexual harassment prevention.  \nLane spent over a decade as General Counsel of Times Square Church\, serving as part of the Executive Leadership team and focusing on employment practices\, risk management\, intellectual property\, and contracts.
