SUMMARY:Safeguards for Kids - Callahan\, FL
DESCRIPTION:1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. What can Christians do to change these disturbing facts? \nJulie Lowe argues that Christians must lead the way in prevention and response measures to keep kids safe and to respond with the hope of the gospel. Julie is a licensed professional counselor who brings over twenty years of counseling experience to help equip parents to become aware of this issue\, and equip their children to recognize\, respond\, and report immoral behavior from an adult. \nSafeguards 4 Kids will help parents and caregivers to have wisdom and discernment in parenting\, and will teach them how to have age-appropriate conversations with their kids about abuse and threats. In addition to Julie’s presentation\, we will also have mini-talks addressing human trafficking and internet safety for kids. \nJoin us\, so that you can safeguard your kids and equip them with the wisdom necessary to navigate a fallen world. \nThis event is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Each attendee will receive a copy of Safeguards by Julie Lowe! Read more about Safeguards below. \nRegister here!\nChildcare is not provided at this event. With the exception of nursing infants\, children are not permitted due to PG content and limited capacity. \n  \n\nJulie Lowe\nis a former faculty member at the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF). Jeff is based in Jacksonville\, Florida with his wife Kristil and their four children. \n  \n\nJodi Domange\nis the Chief Operating Officer at One More Child\, leading programs that serve vulnerable children and families across the U.S. and internationally. With over a decade of experience\, she has spearheded initiatives in foster care\, anti-trafficking\, and support for single mothers. Jodi is a nationally recognized expert in human trafficking prevention and child welfare\, partnering with law enforcement and communities to bring hope and restoration. \n  \n  \nHuman Trafficking\nHuman sex trafficking is the exploitation of a person for profit and the trauma it leaves in its wake is devastating. There are many myths associated with human trafficking and those myths distract us from what is really happening to our children right under our noses.  Every day in almost every city in America children are being sold for sex and we can stop it. In this session you will learn what human trafficking looks like in our country and what our response should be. You  We will cover ways to protect children and wrap around those in our communities with specific vulnerabilities. Ending sex trafficking is possible and it all starts with education. \nOnline Safety\n\nLike any tool\, the internet and our digital devices can be used for good and ill. Parents and caregivers should be on the front lines to protect children and youth from online threats and exploitation. Learn how to stay alert to virtual dangers and how to put measures in place to keep kids safe online. \nTeach safety\, supervise young children\, review games and apps\, adjust privacy settings\, warn about online dangers\, be alert to signs of abuse\, identify safe adults\, report incidents to the authorities. \n \n\nSafeguards\nBecause children are vulnerable\, they need to be protected. After more than two decades as a family counselor\, Julie Lowe has seen how important it is to help parents and caregivers think wisely and biblically about the dangers children face. Instead of living in fear or denial\, parents and caregivers can equip children to assess people and situations and model for them how to live by faith in a world where evil exists. \nLowe helps parents and caregivers teach the safety skills that will help protect their children from mistreatment\, unsafe situations\, violence\, bullying\, cyber-crimes\, predatory behavior\, sexting\, abuse\, and other kinds of danger that they might encounter. The safety skills that are needed at every stage—preschool\, elementary-age\, teens\, and college-bound—are discussed and applied in an age-appropriate way. \nSafeguards provides tools\, skills\, and resources to help when faced with uncomfortable\, challenging\, or dangerous situations. Instead of growing more anxious\, parents and caregivers can grow in a biblical understanding of the type of dangers and issues children and young people might face\, learn how to instill confidence and conviction in responding to new or fearful situations\, and distinguish safe vs. unsafe people and situations.

DESCRIPTION:We believe that as Christ-followers\, protecting the next generation starts with us. Christians have the best answers for protecting children\, equipping parents and leaders\, and caring for the abused because our biblical worldview shapes us. With shocking reports of sexual abuse and alarming statistics on digital threats and exploitation\, what can parents and ministry leaders do to protect our kids and train them to be wise in a hyper-sexualized world? How do we care for those who’ve been victimized by those inside or outside of the church? We start by creating safe places to hear the gospel\, heal from past pain\, and to grow in discipleship in our Christ-centered organizations. It begins with ministry leaders\, then moves upstream to educate and equip parents. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Options for ECAP Members:\nAdvance ECAP Member (no lunch): $5\nAdvance ECAP Member\, lunch included: $15\n\nAt-Door ECAP Member (no lunch): $15\nAt-Door ECAP Member\, lunch included: $25\n\n \nRegistration Options for Non-Members: \nAdvance Non-Member (no lunch): $10\nAdvance Non-Member\, lunch included: $20\nAt-Door Non-Member (no lunch): $20\nAt-Door Non-Member\, lunch included: $30\n \nLOCATION: Indiana Convention Center Rooms 101-103\n\n\n\nJoin us at The Gospel Coalition Conference for this Auxiliary Event. \nClick here to see sponsorship options for this event! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t miss this important and timely panel conversation moderated by Courtney Reissig and including author and TGC editor Jared Kennedy\, attorney and ECAP counsel\, Sally Wagenmaker\, former US Marshals Service director John Clark\, and author and educator Dr. Lynne Little. SUMMARY:Should churches be incorporated? - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Church incorporation is a matter of stewardship and of managing liability. Incorporation creates an important shield of liability for your members and for your church. Can you imagine a scenario where an injury or abuse allegation claim might challenge your gospel witness in your community? How can you maintain the religious freedoms and protections that define separation of church and state while still stewarding the ministry you have been called to lead? Attorney Rob Showers will address these common questions and more related to managing liability and protecting the Christian ministry you are called to by our Lord Jesus Christ. \n\n\n\nSpecifically for churches in Virginia but in other states and jurisdictions\, don’t miss this webinar to help you think through the benefits of incorporation while still holding to your convictions and values as a Christian ministry. John’s roots as the son of a dairy farmer brought his career life full circle where he now once again enjoys the agrarian lifestyle. \n\n\n\nHuman Trafficking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHuman sex trafficking is the exploitation of a person for profit and the trauma it leaves in its wake is devastating. \n\n\n\nOnline Safety\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLike any tool\, the internet and our digital devices can be used for good and ill. Parents and caregivers should be on the front lines to protect children and youth from online threats and exploitation. Learn how to stay alert to virtual dangers and how to put measures in place to keep kids safe online. \n\n\n\nTeach safety\, supervise young children\, review games and apps\, adjust privacy settings\, warn about online dangers\, be alert to signs of abuse\, identify safe adults\, report incidents to the authorities. \n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsors:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSafeguards\n\n\n\nBecause children are vulnerable\, they need to be protected. \n\n\n\nLowe helps parents and caregivers teach the safety skills that will help protect their children from mistreatment\, unsafe situations\, violence\, bullying\, cyber-crimes\, predatory behavior\, sexting\, abuse\, and other kinds of danger that they might encounter. The safety skills that are needed at every stage—preschool\, elementary-age\, teens\, and college-bound—are discussed and applied in an age-appropriate way. \n\n\n\nSafeguards provides tools\, skills\, and resources to help when faced with uncomfortable\, challenging\, or dangerous situations. Instead of growing more anxious\, parents and caregivers can grow in a biblical understanding of the type of dangers and issues children and young people might face\, learn how to instill confidence and conviction in responding to new or fearful situations\, and distinguish safe vs. unsafe people and situations.

SUMMARY:Power To Heal & Power To Hurt: How Sexual Harassment Is Related To Child Safeguarding & A Healthy Culture Webinar
DESCRIPTION:At Telios Law PLLC we are seeing unprecedented levels of allegations and misconduct in areas that are supposed to be safe and secure—schools\, churches\, families—which also creates existential threats to the organization. To build the Church\, we have to keep the next generation safe. But it’s not just the children. For a healthy ministry or even workplace\, the culture of safety and protection should operate throughout the organization. This existential danger also presents an incredible opportunity: people will go to where they find safety and healing. To that end\, it’s important to consider sexual harassment as well as child safeguarding. They are closely related\, and sometimes even overlap. By promoting a culture of protection\, the Church can foster healing\, keep people safe\, and strengthen the organization. \n\n\n\nThis event is free for ECAP Members and $25 for non-members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout our Presenter:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheresa Sidebotham assists organizations in the U.S. and internationally\, with a special focus on employment law\, religious and nonprofit law\, and child safety. She advises on numerous misconduct investigations. She is also the founder of Telios Law PLLC. Theresa was mentored by judges at the Colorado Court of Appeals and worked at a large law firm serving religious institutions and doing general litigation before opening Telios Law. She has since gone on to represent a variety of businesses\, ministries\, churches\, and individual clients in matters ranging from child protection to employment to civil rights and more. Her cross-cultural experience helps her serve ministries and businesses well\, particularly in negotiating employment problems and conducting internal investigations into misconduct allegations. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout our Sponsor: Telios Law PLLC\n\n\n\nAny trustworthy law practice must produce excellent legal work\, but competence isn’t the only skill you need. SUMMARY:Integrating Offenders Into the Church Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Not every church is called to minister to convicted sex offenders. When churches minister to sex offenders\, they must implement a careful grace that is based upon an educated understanding of offenders and how they act.  A careful grace starts with putting the needs of children and survivors first.  A careful grace embraces the reality that actions must have consequences.  A careful grace requires church leaders and workers to be trained in child protection\, and our churches to have clear and effective safeguarding policies and procedures.  Only within a context of careful grace can churches effectively care for sex offenders. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this webinar from attorney Rob Showers who instructs church leaders who to redemptively shepherd the offender while still protecting the vulnerable. This takes intentional leadership and shrewd management to steward a tension that will exist in your ministry.   \n\n\n\nThis event will be free for ECAP Members and $20 for non-members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:  \n\n\n\nAbout NorthStar Church Network:  \n\n\n\nNorthStar Church Network is a diverse family of autonomous congregations committed to practicing Baptist distinctives and strategically advancing the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Our Network is comprised of almost 170 churches in Northern Virginia/DC. \n\n\n\nWhile respecting and advocating for the autonomy of the local church\, practices of Network churches are consistent with the NorthStar core beliefs and values. \n\n\n\necap.net/northstar \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Showers co-founded Simms Showers\, a Baltimore\, Maryland-based law firm\, in 2002 as a principal partner and now heads up the firm’s new Northern Virginia/Metropolitan D.C. office. His practice focuses on civil and commercial litigation and church\, nonprofit\, and business law. Showers regularly handles numerous lawsuits for and against churches\, nonprofits\, and small businesses. He also provides guidance on a variety of matters\, including risk management\, tax exemption\, land use\, and employment issues to defend against current or future legal liability. \n\n\n\nShowers has served hundreds of churches\, denominations\, and nonprofits nationwide throughout his career\, including the Southern Baptist Convention\, the Assemblies of God\, the Presbyterian Church of America\, Americans United for Life\, and Youth With a Mission. Prior to entering private practice in 1989\, Showers served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General and served as Executive Director of the National Obscenity Enforcement Unit (NOEU)\, later called the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS)\, within the US Department of Justice. \n\n\n\nShowers sits on numerous boards. He serves as past president on the national board of directors of Christian Legal Society\, and as chairman of Gateway Community Church. He previously served as a member of the Southern Baptist Convention’s executive committee. \n\n\n\nShowers earned his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1980. SUMMARY:Creating a Response Plan Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Having a plan for how your organization would respond to a discovery of abuse is invaluable. Whether the abuse were to be perpetrated by someone within your organization or someone without\, how you respond will impact the victim’s recovery\, perpetrator’s sentence\, and your organization’s reputation. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we engage in a discussion about what elements you should include in your church or ministry’s response plan so that you may respond biblically and lawfully if an allegation of abuse were to arise. \n\n\n\nWe don’t like to think about the fact that one of our own could be abused in our care or that one of our own could be an abuser. But that is precisely why it is so vital to create and maintain an abuse response plan while heads are clear\, and hearts are not burdened by the sorrow that comes when abuse is uncovered. \n\n\n\nAlthough we do everything in our power to protect kids and prevent abuse\, on this side of heaven it still happens. You don’t want to be caught on your heels when faced with such a heavy\, heartbreaking situation. \n\n\n\nLet us come alongside you to give guidance on how to build a response plan that works for you and your specific ministry context. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmber Privett is a faithful follower of Christ and a licensed clinical social worker. In her work she helps abuse survivors navigate their stories and find healing. She owns Amber Privett Counseling and serves clients all over the state of Florida. Throughout her career\, she has played a pivotal role in numerous child abuse prevention initiatives\, anti-trafficking efforts\, and family preservation. She is a BCM graduate and serves on the advisory council for Safe Families for Children’s Florida and Tampa efforts. She currently calls Tampa\, Florida home. \n\n\n\nWhile Amber desires to create a safer world for the most vulnerable among us\, she most ardently desires that the church be a space where abuse survivors can experience the comfort\, love\, and peace of God. This has led her to her work as both a consultant and a trainer for local churches. Several churches utilize her services when they a knowledgeable professional experienced in abuse\, mental health\, and trauma-related topics.

John began his career in the public sector serving briefly in the U.S. Border Patrol\, the U.S. Capitol Police and then more extensively he worked for the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) for more than 28 years. John served in many top leadership positions within the USMS. After retirement from the USMS\, John began his private sector career as the Director of Security Operations for the Information Systems and Global Solutions business sector of the nation’s largest defense contractor\, Lockheed Martin Corporation. John finished his lengthy career in the nonprofit sector having retired in April 2022 as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). In his capacity as CEO\, John was the chief child safety advocate for NCMEC and as such helped shape public policy and encourage community action to ensure every child has a safe childhood. John has testified before Congress\, the European Commission\, and EUROPOL as a subject matter expert regarding the global problem of child exploitation. In addition\, John was credited with growing the organization to over 400 employees and an annual revenue base of more than 60 million dollars\, all of which was focused on finding missing children and stopping child exploitation.More recently\, John and his wife became owners/operators of Harvest of Hope Farm\, LLC in Culpeper\, Virginia where they grow produce in large quantities\, 100% of which is donated to regional food banks. John’s roots as the son of a dairy farmer brought his career life full circle where he now once again enjoys the agrarian lifestyle. \n\n\n\n\nHuman Trafficking\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHuman sex trafficking is the exploitation of a person for profit and the trauma it leaves in its wake is devastating. \n\n\n\nOnline Safety\n\n\n\nLike any tool\, the internet and our digital devices can be used for good and ill.
